Kick-off event for the joint project RE-FLEX

24.01.2019 -

On 24.01.2019 the official launch event for the joint project RE-FLEX took place at the LENA. Together with the partners Fraunhofer ICT, balticFuelCells GmbH and inhouse engineering GmbH, the overall project and the single tasks were presented.

The project focuses on the development and research of unitized reversible PEM fuel cells (URFC). A PEM-URFC is an energy converter that combines the properties of fuel cells and electrolyzers in the same system. In fuel cell mode, the PEM-URFC uses hydrogen and oxygen and generates electricity and heat. In electrolyzer mode, the URFC reverses this process. While supplying electrical energy, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. Since the same cell stack is used for both operation, the system can be constructed significantly less expensive than individual fuel cell / electrolyzer units.

The applications of such PEM-URFC systems can range from decentralized stationary power generation and storage of excess regenerative energy to the connection of the gas, heat and electricity network to a multimodal network (sector coupling). Thus, PEM-URFC systems could make a decisive contribution as a key technology for a clean and successful implementation of the "Energiewende".

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is supporting the project with a subsidy amounting to 1.33 million euros over a period of 3 years.
