LENA at the ISGT Europe 2024 in Dubrovnik
IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe 2024 is a flagship conference that took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia from 14 to 17 October and focused on the latest developments, trends and innovations in the field of smart grids. It provides a central platform for shaping the future of the modern power grid. Every year, the conference brings together experts, engineers and scientists from all over the world to present their research findings, exchange experiences and work together on solutions for grid modernisation.
Christoph Sauer represented the LENA Chair this year and presented his work entitled ‘Development of an Instantaneous Reserve Market and Storage Park Based on Inertia Safety Levels’. In his research, he sheds light on the changes in the German energy landscape, in particular the elimination of rotating masses due to the phase-out of conventional power plants. This will result in a future need for instantaneous reserve, which will have to be provided via inverter systems in the future. His article also provides insights into the costs of establishing a market for instantaneous reserve and building a storage park to ensure this reserve.
In addition, the research work of our Brazilian colleague, who currently supports the LENA Chair, Leonardo Nogueira Fontoura da Silva, entitled "Innovative Strategy for the Socioeconomic Variables Impact Evaluation on Non-Technical Losses" was presented by his colleague Vinicius J. Garcia in a poster session. This paper presents a method for geographical analysis of non-technical losses (NTL) in the electricity distribution sector that integrates socio-economic and technical distribution data to identify energy theft and connection fraud more efficiently. In a Brazilian case study, the method improved feature selection and significantly increased the Mutual Information and Spearman correlation indices.
The IEEE PES ISGT Europe conference is a major annual platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas on the future of sustainable energy systems. This year, 571 authors came together to present their research results. There were 433 presentations in total, while the rest of the work was presented in an extensive poster session.
A particular highlight of the conference was the creative use of a Tesla coil, which was transformed by the organisers into an extraordinary musical instrument. With the help of electric arcs, the coil generated electrical discharges that sounded in different tones and thus became music.
The LENA Chair would like to thank the organisers for a successful ISGT 2024 conference and looks forward to future opportunities for collaboration.
